went for street jazz level 1 by shanice. this class was a continuation of the previous class, but the instructor did not even share that this was a part 2, nor did she say which steps were a recap and which steps were the new part. the instructor also did not teach any techniques - she just demonstrated the steps and went straight into counting. she didn’t even bother breaking it down. even a youtube tutorial would be better. there were over 30 students packed into one class. the room was small and there were barely enough room to dance properly. i guess converge prioritises the students’ money than them actually learning properly. overall, it was a very bad experience and i wouldn’t recommend this class and studio to anyone else.

I recently joined a Hip Hop Level 1 class at Converge Studio with Sabrina. It was my first time, but the studio was easy to find, just near Dhoby Ghaut MRT, thanks to their Instagram directions. The class was fun, with a spacious waiting area and mirrors. Despite being out of practice, the steps were easy to follow.

I have tried out two different open classes - K-Pop Basics (Daryl), Jazz Basics (Yee) and Hip Hop Basics. First of all, I love the location of this studio — it is super convenient and located within the Dhoby Ghaut MRT. There is also a wide selection of dance classes, which I look forward to trying in the future. For K-pop basics, the class focused quite extensively on choreography itself (rather than techniques), which may be challenging for absolute beginners. Some classes felt more challenging than others, so it can be a hit or miss for some, depending on your dance level. Due to the large number of students, the instructor filmed the students in batches at the end of the class, resulting in the class to overrun by about 15 minutes (which wasn’t a huge deal). For Jazz basics, the class focused more on techniques (how to breathe, how to jump and land properly, etc), leaving only about 10-15 minutes at the end of the class for choreography. So if you are a beginner, you may appreciate the amount of time spent on techniques, but may not 100% catch the choreography at the end. The warm-ups can be a little challenging and feel like a workout by themselves. I also must commend the patience and wit the instructor has to make the class so fun! He is extremely good at explaining the techniques as well as inserting very witty comments here and there to lighten up the mood. For Hip Hop Basics (the one on Wednesday evening), I thought that the class was quite poorly planned and executed. 15 minutes were spent on warm-up, which was challenging for those who are inflexible, and ironically, much harder than the actual remainder of the dance class. The remaining class was spent learning down bounce and up bounce, and the instructor made everyone repeatedly jump and bounce whilst walking around and checking everyone's forms, which I found quite excessive. I also do not get the point of being overly strict and anal about the form when there were barely any choreos, or even party moves, taught. It was quite uncomfortable to have the instructor walk around and comment on your form whilst repeatedly doing the same moves for 45 minutes. The class overran in the end. This was the least enjoyable class I had out of the other Basics classes. Perhaps this class will appeal to someone with absolutely no dance background, but with a moderate fitness level. However, similar to some of the other reviews, the crowd management for the classes at this studio is very poor. You do not need to sign in with the counter before class to confirm your attendance (compared to other studios), and you can book the class right up to the last minute. The studio for all the classes we attended was quite crowded, so you will barely have much space for yourself. I also think my friend accidentally hit someone behind when she was practicing the dance moves (whoops!).
