Singapore's private education landscape outside of mainstream schools is one of the densest in the world. Group tuition centres charge S$30–S$60 per hour and suit students who work well in structured environments; private tutors cost S$40–S$120 per hour but offer pace-matched learning and schedule flexibility. For weaker subjects or exam prep, private tutors usually accelerate progress faster; for general subject coverage, centres are more cost-effective.

Credentials matter more than marketing. Most private tutors and centre teachers aren't MOE-certified — only school teachers need full certification — so the honest signals are subject degree, ex-MOE teaching experience, and a track record of student results. Ask for recent results and student profiles before committing, and start with a trial lesson rather than a semester package. For enrichment (music, dance, art, STEM, coding), the pattern is different: look at portfolio and exam-track alignment (ABRSM for music, LCM for speech and drama, National Olympiad prep for STEM).

Timing also matters. Physical classes like swimming, music, and dance can start from age 2–3. Academic enrichment such as phonics and Chinese typically begins at 4. STEM and coding programs work best from P1 onwards. Starting earlier than these benchmarks rarely helps — child development research shows diminishing returns on over-scheduled pre-schoolers.
