Dr. Kelvin Thia is one of the best doctors I have ever consulted in Singapore! He is knowledgeable, patient, thorough, and pleasant -always reassuring and helpful! I also want to give a big shout-out to his front desk team, especially Ruth. She is so efficient, helpful, and always puts herself in your shoes. I had some other issues that Dr. Kelvin kindly referred me to another specialist for, but I encountered some hiccups with the other clinic. Ruth went above and beyond her job to help me settle everything. I truly couldn’t be more grateful!
I did an colonoscopy and gastroscopy with Dr Tan HH on 27 Feb 2025. All was good except for "upper oesophageal white patches suggestive of candidiasis". Dr Tan said to review in 6 months since it did not bother me. In August, the clinic contacted me to arrange for a follow-up review. Being a patient who doesn't know any better, I would expect that this follow-up was for the candidias. I arrived at the clinic on my review on 17 Sep at 930am. I got to see Dr Tan right away, and to my surprise, the "medical consult" lasted less than 2 minutes! In the "consultation", all Dr Tan said in the less than 2 minutes were if I in was pain after the scope in Feb , and to arrange for my next gastroscopy in 6 months. There was no medical examination or medical consult of any kind. If I were in pain after the scope in Feb (6 months ago), I would have seen her earlier and not wait for the review. There was no mention of my candidias, or if I should be doing any examination to access the situation. I was totally confused that my consult session was over. I was appalled and asked the staff why I need to pay for the consultation when there was no consult at all. Whatever that transpired in that 2 minutes in Dr Tan's room could have been done via a phone call or text message. What appalled me more was when the staff said "You can claim insurance for this $109". I was totally shocked. How many patients are there like me who have paid for a 2-min "medical review and follow-up" and pass the cost over to the insurance companies. I wonder. I would not be returning to this clinic and would not recommend her to anyone.
While Dr Thia is knowledgeable and the staff polite and responsive, serious lapses affected my overall experience. Firstly, my endoscopy images were mislabelled with another patient’s name and details. When informed, the clinic clarified that the "technical error" occurred at the Endoscopy Centre and were responsive in following up. Still, the incident was brushed off as just an “unpleasant experience”. This felt inadequate given the privacy and potential care implications. Secondly, I was prescribed Librax and told at least thrice by different staff that it was for pain. It was only during my follow-up — after I brought it up — that I was told it contains a benzodiazepine, intended to act as a neuromodulator. While this may have been clinically justifiable, I was not informed about the potential for dependence or related risks when it was first prescribed, which is a significant omission. Overall, the care felt somewhat generic, with limited proactive communication around safety and patient-specific considerations. There’s room for improvement in ensuring patients are fully informed and in handling sensitive issues with the seriousness they deserve. [Update: I spoke with Dr Thia who was apologetic and appeared genuinely committed to improving processes. While my experience left much to be desired, I appreciate his response and acknowledge that future experiences at the clinic may differ.]
Dr. Thia is a wonderful doctor. He is knowledgeable ofcourse, but he is also kind and patient and healing. His primary focus is getting his patients to feel better and have a good quality of life. I have been with him for over 6 years and feel blessed to have a doctor like him. The clinic staff is also kind, thoughtful and super efficient. Thank you Dr. Thia. Thank you Grace and team and Thank You Hope. You are named right 🙏
I was looking for a gastroenterologist for my digestive and bowel issues and Dr Kelvin Thia is highly recommended by a friend who is a doctor. Dr Thia is knowledgeable and clear in his explanations. He is an active listener who is open to discuss the appropriate screening tests and treatment plan. His two lovely clinic assistants, Grace and Ruth are very efficient and always ready to go the extra mile to assist. I would recommend the great team at Hope Gastroenterology and Liver Clinic to anyone considering a gastroscopy/colonoscopy or requiring treatment for digestive issues.
