9 Dental Myths Singaporeans Still Believe (Debunked)

18 Sep 2026 · 7 min read · Dental

Let's be real — most of us only think about our teeth when something starts hurting at 2am, jialat right? In between, we rely on whatever our grandma, that one auntie at the kopitiam, or a random TikTok told us about dental care. Problem is, half of it is fake news.

We spoke to the vibe of every Singaporean dental clinic (okay, and did our homework) to bust the biggest myths floating around. TL;DR: some of these misconceptions might be costing you money — or worse, your teeth. Let's dive in.

Myth #1: If your teeth don't hurt, you don't need a dentist

This is the OG myth that keeps dental clinics from Tampines to Bukit Batok fully booked with emergency cases. People think "no pain = no problem" and skip check-ups for years.

Truth is, cavities and gum disease are often silent in their early stages. By the time you feel pain, it's usually already progressed to needing a root canal (SGD 800–1,500 at private clinics) instead of a simple filling (SGD 80–200). A routine check-up plus scaling and polishing at a polyclinic or private clinic costs around SGD 60–150, way cheaper than emergency treatment.

What's actually true

Go for a check-up every 6 months, even if you feel fine. Prevention is always shiok-er (and cheaper) than cure.

Myth #2: Scaling and polishing weakens your teeth or makes gaps bigger
