3 S'pore Families Share Their Real Student Care Experiences

If you're a dual-income HDB family in 2026, chances are the words "student care" have come up at the dinner table at least once — usually followed by a long sigh and some mental math. Between work, CCA pickups, and trying to have some semblance of a life, student care has become the quiet backbone of many Singaporean households.

But what's it actually like? Not the brochure version — the real, sometimes jialat, sometimes surprisingly okay version. We spoke to three composite families (profiles based on common real-life situations across different neighbourhoods) about their journey with student care in Singapore, what they paid, and what they wish they knew earlier.

1. The Tampines Dual-Income Family: "We Needed Someone From 2pm To 7pm, Every Single Day"

Meet the Lims (not their real name, but you probably know a family just like them) — both parents working full-time jobs in the CBD, commuting back to their 4-room BTO in Tampines North every evening around 6.45pm. Their daughter, then in Primary 2, used to be looked after by her grandmother, but after Grandma's knee surgery, that arrangement wasn't sustainable anymore.

They enrolled her in a student care centre located within her primary school — one of the biggest lobangs for working parents, honestly, because there's zero travel time between school dismissal and care pickup.

  • What it cost: Around $350/month after subsidies (before subsidy it was closer to $500/month)
  • Operating hours: 2pm to 7pm on school days
  • Extras: $60/month for enrichment add-ons like art and basic coding classes

The Lims applied for the Child Care Subsidy via ECDA's portal (fun fact: student care subsidies are means-tested based on household income, so it pays to check your eligibility even if you think you earn "too much"). Their monthly income was below the $12,000 combined cap, which qualified them for a decent subsidy amount.

What surprised them most wasn't the cost — it was how much their daughter's homework completion rate improved. Having a structured 4pm-5pm "homework hour" built into the centre's schedule meant way less nagging at home.
