Last year I suffered from autonomic dysfuntion (syncope), triggered by a viral infection after giving birth. I was very ill and also very concerned as I was multi-symptomatic and did not understand the cause of my symptoms, despite doing the rounds of multiple specialists. Amongst other symptoms I had been struggling with unpredictable non-trigger-specific sudden raises in heart rate, mostly at rest, and a feeling of not being able to get in sufficient breath (whilst having normal oxygen saturation levels). During one such episode at work I rushed to Mt Elizabeth Novena and having Googled Dr Tay, asked the A&E specialist to arrange a consultation. Within an hour Dr Tay appeared to see me and was able to arrange a tilt-table for the next morning first thing with his autonomic specialist colleague who performed the tilt-table test and was able to diagnose the cause of my symptoms. Dr Tay saw me almost immediately after to answer all of my questions, prescribe me an alternative drug (Ivabadrine) which steadied my heart rate and stopped flare-ups of heart rate unpredictability, and offered me wholistic and practical tips (hydration, electrolytes, continuing to exercise in zone 3 max, Neurosym) to recover and liaised with my cardiologist-physio to direct the course of rehabilitation sessions. He was able to reassure me that my condition had a positive outlook and gave me the confidence that I had lost back, and changed my mindset, which made a huge difference to my recovery trajectory. After such a prolonged period of uncertainty he really changed the course of my treatment and recovery and I would highly recommend him as a doctor. Furthermore, he put my interests first in involving his colleague Dr Kojodjojo in my treatment, given his direct specialization in dysautonomia.
