A Grateful Heart — My Journey with Dr Paul Chiam and the TAVI Team from The Heart and Vascular Centre I recently underwent a procedure called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) to replace my aortic valve. Before the TAVI, another delicate procedure known as BASILICA was performed to prepare for the valve implantation. When I was first informed that I needed a valve replacement, I was told that the conventional method would be open-heart surgery. However, as I am currently on dialysis due to kidney failure, an open-heart surgery was considered very high-risk. My wife, who is a medical doctor, shared the same concern. After a detailed review of my condition through CT angiograms and other investigations, Dr Paul Chiam carefully assessed that I would be suitable for a TAVI procedure with BASILICA preceding it. He explained every step and possible risk with such clarity and compassion that my wife and I felt assured and confident in proceeding. The surgery was performed on a Saturday morning, and I was up and walking the very next day with minimal discomfort — truly remarkable. What felt miraculous was how quickly my blood pressure normalised, the aortic regurgitation/leak stopped and how my enlarged heart began to recover and correct itself soon after. Dr Paul Chiam is a brilliant, meticulous, and deeply caring physician. Despite his busy schedule and many patients, he made me feel as though I was his only focus. He anticipated every possibility, planned for every scenario, and carried out the procedures with the utmost precision and dedication. Given the complexity of my case, Dr Paul assembled a world-class multidisciplinary team — including Dr Lim Choon Pin, Dr Karl Poon from Brisbane, Dr Sivathason, and cardiac anaesthetist Dr Jerry. Together, they pushed medical boundaries; I was told I am only the second patient in Singapore with such complications to be treated in this manner. Therefore, in a sense, this is ground breaking. To me and my wife, this experience is nothing short of a miracle. My heartfelt thanks go to Dr Paul Chiam and his entire team for their exceptional skill, care, and compassion. I will be eternally grateful — and I now consider Dr Paul a friend for life. For anyone facing similar conditions, I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr Paul Chiam for TAVI and other minimally invasive cardiac procedures. My father recently underwent heart valve PASCAL surgery under the care of Dr Paul Chiam, and we are extremely grateful for the experience and outcome. After an echocardiogram scan at NUH revealed an abnormality in my father’s heart valve, we were able to secure a next-day appointment, which already gave us great peace of mind. From the very first consultation, Dr Chiam was reassuring, professional, and clearly an expert in his field. He promptly arranged for a TEE scan within the next two days, which was performed by Dr Lim Choon Pin, and we received the diagnosis on the very same day. The results confirmed mitral valve prolapse, and Dr Chiam carefully explained all the treatment options available to us. He took the time to walk us through everything in detail and answered all our questions patiently, which really helped us feel confident and informed. After discussing the options, we decided on the minimally invasive PASCAL procedure, which Dr Chiam felt was suitable for my father. The operation was a success and was performed by Dr Lim Choon Pin together with Dr Paul Chiam. Dr Chiam had explained beforehand that the leak would likely be very mild, but the results turned out to be even better than expected, with the leak closed up even more. My father recovered very quickly within one day and was able to return to normal activities the next day. In addition, the nursing team at Dr Chiam’s clinic was extremely helpful and supportive. They never failed to respond whenever we needed help or clarification, both before and after the operation. They were always efficient, reassuring, and professional, which was a very important source of support for us during this entire journey. Dr Paul Chiam is truly superb at what he does. He is not only highly skilled and knowledgeable, but also approachable, caring, and genuinely attentive to his patients and their families. We would highly recommend him to anyone needing specialised heart treatment.
