19 Sep 2026 · 8 min read · BTO Applications

Every year, thousands of Singaporeans queue up (virtually, at least) for a shot at a BTO flat. And every year, the same misconceptions get passed around at hawker centre tables and family WhatsApp groups. Some of these myths could cost you tens of thousands of dollars in grants you didn't claim, or years of waiting for a flat you didn't actually need to wait for. Here's what you need to know before you hit that HDB InfoWEB 'Apply' button.

Myth 1: You Need to Be Married (or Engaged) to Apply

This one's outdated. Since the Single Scheme and Joint Singles Scheme were expanded, Singaporean citizens aged 35 and above can apply solo for a 2-room Flexi BTO flat, and two singles can jointly apply for larger flats in non-mature estates. Prices for a 2-room Flexi in places like Bidadari or Tengah typically range from $90,000 to $180,000 depending on lease length (short or full 99-year).

Myth 2: BTO Is Always Cheaper Than Resale, So It's the Obvious Choice

BTO is usually cheaper upfront, but
