When enquiring about a place, it is worth clarifying which level and format suits your child — whether that is a beginner introduction to the game, intermediate competitive preparation, or advanced tournament training. Ask whether classes are conducted in small groups or one-to-one, how sessions are structured across a term, and whether there is flexibility to join mid-term. Parents travelling from other parts of Singapore should also confirm whether in-person attendance at United Square is required or whether any sessions are available online.
To take the next step, reach out to Chess Connections via WhatsApp, phone, or the enquiry form listed on their profile to ask about current availability, upcoming term dates, and whether a trial class is offered before committing to a full term.
Take the trial class and confirm the tutor's actual credentials before committing to a term.
Teacher Sebastian is really patient with the children and my kid is enjoying all his classes for the past year. The teachers are well trained, the administration is responsive. They run a tight ship in the limited space they have at Novena. They know what they are doing and how to get to the kids. Maybe chess really can be taught at 3!
Teacher Kevin is a gem! My child has been learning chess with Teacher Kevin at Three Chess Singapore, and the progress has been amazing. He’s incredibly patient, encouraging, and explains strategies in a way that’s fun and easy to grasp—even for young beginners. You can tell he truly cares about each student’s growth, not just as chess players but as thinkers. The sessions are always engaging, and my child looks forward to every class. Thank you, Teacher Kevin, for making chess such a meaningful and enjoyable journey!
Signed my child for the chess class and he enjoyed it tremendously. They make it fun for children to learn. Recommended!
We have two children attending this program. Chess at Three does an amazing job keeping kids engaged in the game with fun stories and variant games to keep things fresh for the kids while also teaching core chess knowledge. The staff not only knows their chess, but also know how to help kids learn universal values like handling loss, perseverance, thinking creatively/outside the box, and also how to get along well in groups during competitive play. My kids come away with actual tactical knowledge for real chess tournaments while also telling me stories about the different chess “characters” and what adventures they had during the class. In the past, we had gone to a traditional chess school (which was great!) but the kids could be engaged/disengaged depending on the day. With this program, the kids are always excited to go and view it as fun rather than a form of tutoring/homework. Creating a love for the game I think makes it more likely they will stick with it and become proficient with their skills. Plus they have a fun ‘Birchguard’ quest (separate from the chess lessons), which is like a role playing critical thinking adventure that the kids love. The camps and tournaments are also lots of fun. Highly recommended!
It is more of a storytelling class rather than chess. If you’re looking for your child to learn chess this is not the place, the coaches can barely play chess. If you’re looking for a very fun story telling session this is it, the coaches are really good at their craft at storytelling. I guess we didn’t read the fine print.

Chess Connections displays a mid-range pricing tier ($$), but specific per-session rates, monthly package fees, and term bundle pricing are not publicly listed. To get an accurate figure, contact the provider directly via WhatsApp, phone, or the enquiry form. When enquiring, ask whether a trial class is available and whether it is charged separately, whether materials or equipment are included, and whether sibling or package discounts apply. Some enrichment providers charge a one-off registration fee in addition to the course fee, so it is worth confirming the full cost upfront. See the full enrichment classes cost guide for Singapore →
Many enrichment providers offer a trial class so families can assess whether the level, teaching style, and group dynamic are a good fit before signing up for a full term. It is worth asking Chess Connections directly whether a trial session is available, what it costs, and whether the fee is credited towards a term if you proceed. During a trial, pay attention to whether the pace matches your child's current ability, how the instructor manages engagement and pace, and whether the group size feels appropriate. Chess at the beginner level requires patient instruction; at competitive levels, the focus shifts to tactical depth and game analysis. Making sure the class matches your child's stage is the most useful thing a trial session can tell you.
Specific instructor credentials for Chess Connections are not listed publicly. When contacting the provider, it is reasonable to ask about the coaches' playing background — for example, whether they hold FIDE ratings, national rankings, or have represented Singapore in competitive play — as well as their experience teaching children at your child's level. For chess enrichment specifically, tournament experience and a structured teaching methodology matter more than a formal teaching qualification. Ask whether coaches follow a recognised curriculum or syllabus, and whether they have experience preparing students for local competitions such as those organised by the Chess Federation of Singapore if that is a goal for your child.
