Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a deeply distressing experience my son, Ng Shu Yang, and I encountered at Raffles Hospital on 2 January during his orthopaedic appointment at 9:40am at the Orthopaedic Centre, Level 12. Upon arrival, we checked in at the counter and were assigned to Dr Amitabha Lahiri. After waiting approximately 10–15 minutes, we were called into the consultation room. Dr Lahiri asked my son several questions and requested him to perform some hand movements. Following this brief assessment, Dr Lahiri informed us that a CT scan was required. As a parent, naturally concerned about my child’s condition and the implications of further investigations, I calmly asked if I could understand why a CT scan was necessary. Dr Lahiri appeared reluctant to explain, prompting me to rephrase my question. He then stated that surgery might be required if the CT scan showed a severe issue. This raised further concern, and I respectfully asked whether there were alternative approaches or options available. At this point, Dr Lahiri became visibly annoyed and responded by telling me to seek two other opinions. I explained that my intention was not to challenge his expertise, but to better understand my son’s condition so that I could make informed decisions as a parent. Instead of addressing my concerns, Dr Lahiri stated that the issue was the way I asked my questions, and insisted that if I was not convinced, I should change to another doctor immediately. I was taken aback when, in front of the nurse, Dr Lahiri described the situation as a “miscommunication.” This was deeply upsetting, as there was no miscommunication. I simply asked questions out of fear and concern for my child. Being dismissed in such a manner made me feel belittled, unheard, and unwelcome. Patients and caregivers are already vulnerable; we should not be made to feel that asking questions is an act of disrespect or defiance. This incident occurred early in the morning, at the very beginning of the year, and it left me emotionally shaken. I believe no patient or parent should be treated this way. Doctors hold a position of trust and authority, but compassion, patience, and communication are equally important. I respectfully request that this matter be reviewed seriously. I hope Raffles Hospital will reflect on this incident and take appropriate steps to ensure that patients and caregivers feel safe, respected, and supported when seeking medical care. Your Sincerely CT
