Dr Gamaliel is a highly skilled spine surgeon who goes the extra mile to secure the best outcomes for his patients. Earlier on, he was willing to offer minimally invasive surgery for my elderly mother when other surgeons declined given her age and physical frailty. He made it a point to visit my mom post surgery everyday and even on weekends. The surgery was successful and my mom regained her ability to walk on her own. Most recently, my mom's degenerative spine disease with severe radicular pain worsened. This time, it necessitated an extensive surgery over 7 hours and fusion of multiple levels of the spine. My mom was hesitant initially but after Dr Gamaliel's careful explanation on the pros and cons of each treatment option and the likely consequences, we decided on surgery. I'm most happy to share that the surgery has been successful and my mom has regained her ability to walk independently once again! Dr Gamaliel's surgical skills are outstanding and at the same time, he is most amiable and compassionate, ever willing to invest time to explore the best possible treatment options to align with the patient's values and preferences. I came to see Dr Gamaliel Tan for a second opinion about a chronic slipped disc on my right side that, after an injection 10 years previously, was now causing pain, numbness and fatigue from weakness. His consultation was calm, wise and friendly. I immediately trusted this doctor. He thoroughly examined me, and was clear about the treatment options. He was also incredibly clear and detailed about what exactly would happen during the operation (a discectomy in my L5/S1 cavity) which was very reassuring. The actual operation was smooth and the care at Mt Elizabeth hospital was second to none, with the nursing and aftercare being of an exceptional standard. The appointments afterwards with Dr Tan were thoughtful, with careful, well-reasoned advice, and his guidance helped me through the six week recovery process. He even showed me a video of the micro-surgery which left me in no doubt about what he did! All in all, I found Dr Tan to be a highly capable, intelligent, imperturbable, and completely reliable doctor and surgeon in whom one could place one’s complete trust.
