Today I called my usual clinic, but they were fully booked and the clinic assistant had no choice but to turn me away. I searched online and hesitated for a few moments about which clinics to select in my area, but ultimately decided against them. I remembered visiting DR+ Medical Paincare Clinic (Bishan) previously and having a positive impression of both the clinic assistants and doctor's service. I decided to try DR+ Medical Paincare Clinic (Kovan). The clinic assistants were pleasant and polite. Although we were the last patients of the day, Dr James Lee didn't rush us through our consultation. Instead, he was kind and patient, examining my child with care. After leaving his room, I suddenly had another question. He was gracious enough to invite us back into his room to take another look at my child and address my concern once more. Even whilst we were making payment and collecting our medication, he took the time to explain the dosing intervals to us. He was very reassuring throughout. Though the wait was long, I believe that when a doctor is skilled and able to diagnose well, it's worth it overall.

My family and I have frequented this clinic over the past few years and have benefited from Dr James’ care. During my visit today with my unwell toddler, another group who arrived after us was allowed to enter ahead of us. When I asked the front desk why, I was told it was because they were the doctor’s family. I later raised this directly with Dr James. He responded that he would choose family over patients and did not offer an apology or acknowledgement of how this might affect other patients. While I understand that exceptions should be made for medical emergencies, prioritisation in a clinic should be transparent and based on queue order or medical need, not personal connection. Using family status as the deciding factor is neither fair nor professional. I am sharing this experience so others can make an informed decision about whether to visit this clinic. This encounter left me disappointed and has made it difficult for me to return in future. Update to the clinic’s clarification: The explanation provided is misleading in the context of what happened. When I enquired, I was explicitly informed by the front desk that the patient was prioritised because they were the doctor’s family, and this was later reiterated directly to me twice by Dr James. Pre-registration and medical urgency were not cited as the reasons, nor was my 1+ year old son’s temperature taken prior to registration despite my disclosure that he had a fever. On this basis, it is unclear how the clinic could have determined who to see first on the basis of medical urgency.
