I gave birth not too long ago, in late July 2024 (Dragon Year). The hospital was extremely busy at that time. When I was admitted, I was placed in the delivery standby area rather than the delivery suite. My gynae appeared to be managing two other deliveries at the same time, and I felt that my case was not given sufficient attention. I also felt that my labour was prolonged through slow induction, without proper monitoring or an early scan to assess my baby’s position. At 39 weeks pregnant, I experienced bleeding and was admitted through A&E. No scan was performed initially. I was advised to induce, as it was said that my water bag had broken and there was a risk of infection. I underwent two rounds of induction, followed by approximately 10–16 hours on an oxytocin drip. Despite nearly 30 hours of labour (including two attempts at anaesthesia), I was still unable to dilate. Only after almost 30 hours did the medical team finally perform a scan. It was then discovered that my baby was in an unfavourable position, which explained why I could not dilate. By that time, my baby had passed motion in the womb and developed meconium due to stress. I eventually had to undergo an emergency C-section under private rates, while still being billed for natural delivery. I was also given continuous antibiotics while I was still pregnant, which raised concerns for me regarding the impact on my baby. After birth, my son’s tongue tie and lip tie were not identified. He later underwent a tongue-tie procedure under general anaesthesia at NUH, but during the surgery, the lip tie was still not noticed. As a result, he now has to undergo a second procedure for the lip tie. When he was an infant, I experienced significant pain while breastfeeding, but I was repeatedly told that it was “normal” without any proper checks being done to assess for tongue or lip tie. I was seeing a NUH gynae under private rates, and my gynae was Dr Chua Tsie Meng. While some nurses were kind and supportive, I also encountered unprofessional and rude behaviour from certain staff members, including being given unpleasant attitudes. Overall, my experience with NUH’s maternity and paediatric care was unsatisfactory. I do not understand why a scan could not be done upon admission and instead was delayed for almost 30 hours, leading to unnecessary prolonged labour and an emergency C-section. Based on my experience, I would personally not choose to deliver at NUH again.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and deepest appreciation to all the medical and support staff at National University Hospital (NUH). Our daughter was admitted through the Emergency Department on the morning of the 6th this month and stayed for four days. What began as an incredibly stressful and frightening time for our family was gently eased by the professionalism, compassion and warmth shown by every member of the NUH team. Because of you, those difficult days became ones filled with reassurance, trust and quiet strength. Our sincere thanks go to the Emergency Department doctors, nurses and front-desk staff; the ward doctors, allied health and nursing teams; all healthcare professionals and medical social workers; the medical students, nursing trainees and healthcare assistants who came through the ward; the meal service and housekeeping teams working diligently behind the scenes; the staff at Zone F Visitors Registration and PSA; as well as the Discharge Lounge team. From admission to discharge, not once did we feel overlooked or unattended. Every interaction was met with patience, professionalism and genuine kindness. In our most anxious and vulnerable moments, you cared not only for our daughter’s medical needs, but also for the emotional well-being of our entire family. Your calm reassurance, gentle words and thoughtful attention meant more to us than we can fully express. We truly experienced NUH as more than a hospital of outstanding medical expertise — it is a place filled with humanity, compassion and heart. To witness such consistent excellence, dedication and kindness across every department is deeply moving. The standard of care we received stands proudly alongside, and even surpasses, many private healthcare experiences. In the midst of urgency and emotional stress, we regret that we were unable to note down every name to thank each of you personally. Please accept our sincere apologies, along with our heartfelt appreciation to every staff member who cared for our daughter — whether seen or unseen. Thank you for caring not only for patients, but also for the families who stand beside them. Your professionalism, dedication and kindness will remain in our hearts long after discharge. May you always be blessed with strength, smooth days at work, good health and happiness in life — just as you bring comfort, hope and healing to so many families each day.
I am extremely thankful to Dr. Vanaja, who I truly feel was nothing less than a god-sent during my delivery. Especially as a first-time mother, her guidance, reassurance, and presence at the most crucial moment meant everything to me. She is incredibly empathetic, calm, and understanding, and her words gave me immense confidence when I needed it most. Because of her, my delivery experience felt safe, positive, and smooth. Although Dr. Vanaja came in specifically for the delivery, from the very beginning and throughout the long hours before that, the nursing and medical team supported me exceptionally well. Mai Foong, Eng Sin, Shao Hung, Dr. Caitlin, Sossany, and Mary Stella (night shift nurse) encouraged me continuously, guided me patiently, and ensured I was never alone or fearful. A special heartfelt thank you to Mary Stella, whose night-shift care, kindness, and constant encouragement helped me through some of the toughest moments, and to the doctor who administered the epidural so smoothly and professionally. This entire team worked together with such compassion and dedication, and because of them, I had a truly smooth and memorable delivery. I will always be grateful for their care and support, and I highly recommend them to all expecting mothers, especially first-time moms. 🌸 Not forgetting their food was of great taste too.
