Today I visited Dr. Jessie Tan due to a serious cough that had persisted for two days. I understand and respect that antibiotics should not be prescribed unnecessarily, and I was not insisting on antibiotics—especially as I have gastric issues and dislike taking them because they irritate my stomach. However, I felt uncomfortable with how my concerns were handled. Despite my explanation that my voice had clearly changed and felt very sore, I was told antibiotics were not needed because there was no swelling or pain. What confused me was being questioned in a way that made me feel as though I was requesting medication dishonestly, which was not the case. I was also told that next time I should not request specific medication. For example, although I usually take Dexilant for my gastric condition, I was instead prescribed omeprazole without much discussion. More concerning was the doctor’s tone and facial expression, which felt frustrated and unwelcoming, making me feel uncomfortable while I was already unwell. When I explained that my regular doctor—who had previously prescribed antibiotics—was not on duty and that I came to the GP out of urgency, the response felt dismissive and rude. I was asked why I didn’t just wait for my usual doctor, which I found unnecessary given the circumstances. I came simply seeking help to recover, not to demand medication or take advantage of anyone. I hope the doctor can reflect on communication style and approach patients with more empathy, especially when they are already sick and vulnerable.

Dr Jesse is amazing. Warm and friendly. However, I had a nasty encounter with one of her staff who was doing the registration. This staff, who was a young boy, did not manage the queue. There was a crowd and I was told to sit and wait, which I complied with. After waiting for sometime, this boy asked me and the rest of the people who were waiting as to who came first. As there was no way to determine who was next in the queue, a random guy went forward with the registration and a different staff instructed this boy to register me next. When it was supposed to be my turn to register, this same boy asked me and the rest again who was next in the queue. Feeling frustrated, I told him that I am not sure and he should be the one doing the tracking. How would a patient who had arrived to a crowded clinic, and was told to sit and wait, know what is his or her queue number? Tracking is his job and not mine. After saying that, this boy still had the nerve to reply: “you can just say you don’t know”. I was very alarmed by his response but decided not to pursue as there was no point in doing so. I have to say that although I was absolutely disgusted by his response, Dr Jesse and her other staffs have always been well liked and extremely competent.
