First-Time Renovation in Singapore: The Complete 2026 Guide

28 Sep 2026 · 9 min read · Renovation

So you just collected your BTO keys, or maybe you're finally doing up that resale flat in Bishan you've been putting off since 2022. Either way, if this is your first rodeo with home renovation in Singapore, the whole process can feel like navigating the MRT during a signal fault — confusing, slightly stressful, and everyone around you seems to know where they're going except you.

Here's what you need to know before you sign anything, pay any deposit, or fall for a renovation package that sounds too good to be true (it usually is).

What Does a Renovation Service Actually Do?

A renovation contractor or interior design (ID) firm takes your empty or existing flat and transforms it based on your budget, lifestyle and taste. This can range from a simple repaint-and-flooring job (a few thousand dollars) to a full gut-and-rebuild with carpentry, false ceilings and smart home wiring (upwards of $60,000).

Broadly, you're choosing between two types of providers:

  • Interior Design (ID) firms — handle design concept, 3D renderings, and project management. They typically outsource the actual construction work to contractors, then mark up the cost.
  • Renovation contractors — do the hands-on work directly (hacking, tiling, carpentry, electrical). Usually cheaper since there's no design markup, but you'll need clearer ideas of what you want since design service may be minimal.

Neither is objectively
