Ant was my ID. His forte is minimalist. He said: "Trends come and go, but minimalist will always stay." This is my third home renovation, so I had met quite a few IDs along the way. Ant is unlike most. He takes a lot of pride in his work. The first time we met in person for a non-obligatory discussion, we spoke for 3 hours. We discussed in detail the floorplan, reviewed ideas I liked: what fits the theme, what doesn't, where money can be better spent, and where definitely not to spend. Ant showed me works of his own to help me visualise how things will turn out to be. He also shared mistakes he had learnt from his many years that homeowners should avoid. None of the IDs I had met ever went down to such detail and effort in the first discussion. They usually priortise accomodating the customer wishes and budget, because this give them the highest chance of getting the business. Whether those wishes are sound are secondary. And they will never spend 3 hours of their time for a non-obligatory discussion. Ant's work ethic is equally if not more impressive. The carpentry contractor told me: "Ant visits his job site daily to monitor contractor work, other IDs only see them at start and end of project, so you no need to worry lah." Of the many decisions I had to make during the renovation, the best decision I made was to engage Ant. I was lucky to have met such an ID.
