We started our design-and-build journey with Studio IF in 2024. At the beginning, the lead designer was very responsive, and although the contract required a 50% upfront payment, I didn’t think too much of it at the time because I felt their stylistic direction aligned with what we wanted. We felt confident. Unfortunately, over the course of two years and six meetings, the design moved further and further away from something we were happy with. While the team was generally accommodating and did take note of our requirements and preferences in the revisions, the execution consistently failed to reflect what had been discussed, and we could never seem to get aligned on the final direction. During this period, there were three assistant designers who were on-boarded and later off-boarded, which signalled a high level of staff turnover and meant the project was repeatedly passed between different people which explains the disparity of output and lack of cohesive vision. Because of these multiple handovers, we often had to chase for updates ourselves, and while we were repeatedly told to be patient, there was very little proactive communication or follow-up from their side. The lead designer however remained constant through the process and though always very helpful, was always stretched for capacity. After several rounds of meetings that initially seemed promising, only for the next meeting to show that things had again gone off track, and after tirelessly chasing just to secure appointments, we ultimately made the difficult decision to terminate the contract. While the termination was allowed under the contract terms, the biggest disappointment was that the 50% upfront payment (over $10,000) was effectively forfeited. Since the payment was due upon appointment under their terms and conditions, no refund was offered even though no further work would be completed. Overall, this was a disappointing experience. Studio IF positions itself as a luxury design expert, but based on what we experienced, it felt like they were handling too many projects with a stretched team, and as a result, they were unable to deliver on the level of service and quality that had been promised. I do acknowledge that the lead designer has definitely been helpful beyond the scope of what is outlined in the terms and conditions and did not charge extra. However, with the premium paid, one would hope that it would be embedded into the price. With that said, the company is likely established for those with a modern luxe aesthetic, and if that is what you're looking for- template of a luxe look, this company will be able to deliver. However, to marry an aesthetic of modern luxe infused with personality of the home owners represented, there is an apparent gap.
