About Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic

About Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic

The Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic (CGC) is a public-sector specialist outpatient service located at 20 Buangkok View, Block 3, Basement 1, Singapore 534194, serving children and adolescents islandwide. It operates under the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), Singapore's national psychiatric hospital. The clinic carries a Google rating of 2.7 from 6 reviews — a very small sample that should be treated as directional only and not as a reliable indicator of service quality.

Children and adolescents are typically referred to the CGC through a polyclinic or GP referral letter, which unlocks subsidised specialist outpatient clinic (SOC) rates for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. Self-referrals or walk-ins without a referral letter will be billed at unsubsidised private rates. At the first appointment, the psychiatrist or psychologist conducts a clinical assessment covering the child's developmental history, presenting concerns, school functioning, and family context. Follow-up appointments establish a diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include outpatient therapy, medication management, or referral to allied health services such as psychology or medical social work available within IMH. Parents and caregivers are integral to the assessment and treatment process, particularly for younger children. MediSave and Integrated Shield Plan coverage may apply to relevant portions of treatment for eligible patients under CDMP-listed conditions.

Contact the clinic by phone or via the online enquiry form to check appointment availability and confirm the referral pathway before your child's first visit.

It was very bad experience here. Today I brought my daughter to see doctor here regard to the refer letter from the clinic near our home. They told me if no appointment here should go to the emergency department without to see the refer letter. They are not suggest me to just make appointment. My daughter need to see psychology doctor, no another issue in physical. We just think this is the process but when we go to the emergency department and wait for doctor for almost 1 hour then doctor come to inform us this is not emergency case should not come here with the cost $100-200. Just make appointment with them. OMG to waste time 1 hour. Bad services and communication ever.

I needed to get my appointment date changed. Called CGC-HPB, was told to leave my name and phone number for they to call back within 1 working day. Received a callback next day and was asked to verify NRIC and DOB over phone. I refused to provide info as I was outside and these are private info that can be overheard by others. Staff spoke in a nonchalant tone and said "okay, you can call us back when you are at home" to which I replied that I will be kept waiting for another working day for them to call back. In light of the increasing number of scam cases in SG, government clinics need to review their patient contact policy - how do I verify that you are indeed who you claim to be calling from before I start giving you my confidential info? This culture needs to change - exactly the reason why citizens are so easily scammed, because government clinics call and ask people for their details over the phone!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic charge?

Fees depend on the referral pathway and subsidy tier. For Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents attending via a polyclinic or GP referral letter, subsidised SOC consultation rates typically run S$30–80 per visit at public institutions, with follow-up visits generally lower than the first consultation. Without a referral, unsubsidised rates apply and are closer to private specialist rates of S$120–250 for a first consultation. Investigations such as psychological assessments, blood panels, or structured diagnostic tools are billed separately from the consultation. Prescriptions, if issued, carry an additional pharmacy charge. For any planned treatment course, the clinic's medical social worker can advise on financial assistance schemes, MediFund eligibility for lower-income families, and CDMP MediSave withdrawal limits (up to S$700 per year for selected chronic and mental health conditions under the Chronic Disease Management Programme). Request a cost estimate in writing before committing to an extended treatment plan. See the full paediatric cost guide for Singapore →

Is Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic MOH-licensed and how do I verify the doctor?

The Child Guidance Clinic operates under the Institute of Mental Health, which is a MOH-restructured hospital. As a public restructured hospital operating under the Healthcare Services Act, IMH holds the relevant MOH institutional licensing — however, no licences are listed in this KakiList entry, so families should confirm directly with IMH or check the MOH licensee directory at moh.gov.sg. Individual psychiatrists and clinical psychologists practising at the CGC should be verifiable through their respective professional registers: psychiatrists on the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) public register at smc.gov.sg, and clinical psychologists on the Singapore Psychological Society (SPS) or, where applicable, the SPA register. Searching the consulting doctor's name on the SMC register confirms registration status and any specialist accreditation in Psychiatry. Confirm the named clinician assigned to your child's case at the point of booking.

How do I use MediSave or insurance at Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic?

Selected mental health conditions treated at the CGC — including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, anxiety disorders, and depression where they meet CDMP criteria — may qualify for MediSave withdrawal under the Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP), with an outpatient limit of up to S$700 per year. Confirm at registration whether your child's specific diagnosis and the clinic's billing codes qualify before assuming MediSave can be used. Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) layered on MediShield Life generally focus on inpatient and day-surgery coverage; outpatient specialist consultations at a subsidised SOC may have limited IP coverage depending on your plan and rider structure. Check with your insurer before the first appointment. For families facing financial hardship, the clinic's medical social worker can assess MediFund eligibility and refer to community financial assistance schemes. Skipping the pre-visit financial check is the most common reason families are surprised by their bill. Listing data is incomplete — contact Institute of Mental Health Child Guidance Clinic directly to confirm details.
